Cancer Prevention and Support Center

Spanish (Intermediate)

This organization’s mission is to improve the lives of people who are affected by cancer. Service-learning participants will work directly with community members and may assist staff in teaching classes with a focus on boosting moral and providing emotional support. Participants have the opportunity to take initiative and actively participate in structured activities. Participants may also facilitate and organize activities for children receiving treatment at the center. To serve at this organization, participants must have a background in health, child psychology, and experience with organizing play-based activities. PLEASE NOTE: Placement assignments that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility. The center is only open in the mornings during July and August due to Summer vacation. *Due to the pandemic, most health-related placements will not be available through Summer 2021.* ** This organization can only accommodate participants for up to 5 hours/week and therefore may not be suitable for full-time Service-Learning participants.

Senior Citizens' Home

Spanish (Beginning)

Within walking distance of the ISA office, this organization is dedicated to providing services for senior citizens to achieve their maximum quality of life and well-being. Help staff coordinate and lead recreational and cultural activities designed to improve and maintain the residents' level of personal autonomy and independence. Take initiative to plan creative activities, organize games, take walks, read and talk with residents, teach dance or aerobics classes, and assist with everyday activities. This organization can take up to 10 service-learning participants at a time and sustainable group projects are encouraged to serve a need identified by the Senior Citizen’s Home. PLEASE NOTE: Placement assignments that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility. This organization cannot accept participants from June 15th - June 30th, available to accept participants in July but closed in August. *Due to the pandemic, most health-related placements will not be available through Summer 2021.*

Community Health Organization

Spanish (Beginning)

This organization is dedicated to providing rehabilitation and mental health services to vulnerable populations in Granada by providing comprehensive medical services and assistance to individuals with disabilities and the homeless. Participants in this role will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the sociopolitical issues in the local community by engaging with patients and community members, offering support to the occupational therapy department, providing support as a teacher’s assistant in the special education school or the dining hall, or helping sort and organize donations. PLEASE NOTE: Placement assignments that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility. *Due to the pandemic, most health-related placements will not be available through Summer 2021.*

Local Hospital

Spanish (High Intermediate)

This hospital offers general and specialty medical services to the Granada community and uses the most up-to-date technology available in the field. This organization placement is best suited students majoring in Pre-Medicine, Pre-Nursing, Public Health, and Health Science or for students interested in learning about foreign health care systems. Participants may have opportunities to learn about health issues, prevention, health care, and patient care in Spain by engaging with and shadowing local professionals and assisting with other administrative tasks and projects.
