As a radio station "for students, by students", it facilitates genuine participation rather than one-way interactions with listeners, and provides diverse and eclectic weekly talk shows covering a wide range of student issues like LGBT rights, Irish language shows, French language shows, Spanish language shows, university sports coverage, unsigned local artists, current affairs, on campus event coverage, and more. Throughout the school year and summer, participants can join a dedicated group of local volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver a series of informative, entertaining, and exciting radio programs to the wider community.

Activities may include assisting or leading city tours, community education events, administrative assistance, or fundraising initiatives. Additional tasks include administrative assistance with promotional initiatives. This is a great placement for students looking to work closely with locals and gain experience in non-profit organization management. This organization is open year round but is more likely to accept service learning students in the summer.

Participants may also have opportunities to assist administrators in program development or research projects.

This center is for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years-old that have autism or other special needs. In addition to conducting primary education classes, the center also provides a multi-sensory stimulation classroom where students work with therapists on a weekly basis. Participants’ tasks may vary depending on their specific area of study or interest, however, some of the possible responsibilities may include assisting with classroom management, providing individualized attention to students, or developing and assisting with art workshops and educational activities. For students studying physical/occupational/speech therapy, there may be opportunities to work with the center’s therapists during their sessions with the students. *This organization is closed from the middle December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

This technical high school is dedicated to the education of technical professions such as gastronomy, food engineering, chemistry, automotive technology, and port operation. High school graduates from this program are awarded a certification in their technical area, which provides them with the skill-sets they need to start their technical career. Participants in the school may work alongside English teachers to assist students between the ages of 14-18 with grammar, pronunciation, homework, lead tutorial sessions, and plan English language activities. Participants with significant work, volunteer, or education experience may also have opportunities to participate in the technical classrooms. *This organization is closed from mid-December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

This organization empowers economically disadvantaged and often marginalized members of society by equipping them with the tools they need to live independently. Services include training in Braille, supporting developing micro-enterprises, health treatments, and a support system to help foster independence. Participants may help with the instruction and therapy of students to empower them to complete their daily activities independently.

These foundations assist Moroccan women of all economic levels to complete their education. Many of the educational courses teach artisan skills (embroidery, calligraphy, literacy, cooking, and hair dressing) to increase employment opportunities and/or assist the women in starting their own businesses. Participant opportunities may include organizing logistics, preparing lesson plans, and teaching English to the women. Additional help may be needed with fundraising, marketing, or creating a social media presence or website development to help the women sell their products.

With one of the best education systems in Latin America, Peru is home to many of South America’s finest primary and secondary schools. Childhood Education Program placements are in various public and private schools and after-school centers. Participants placed in these organizations may have opportunities to assist teachers in Cusco with their classroom duties, help lead English classes, support students through mentoring, develop and facilitate activities and educational games, and assist with homework. Additionally, participants may have the chance to observe teaching techniques and assist teachers with lesson planning and preparation.
Childhood Education Programs at Medical Clinics

This nonprofit organization enables children that are severely impacted by life-threatening illness to continue with as much normalcy as possible by bringing the classroom to their hospital rooms. Participants may assist at a Cancer Hospital or at a Children's hospital in Lima, and may assist the staff in helping these patients stay up to date on the school work they are missing during treatment and care. On days when patients are unwilling or unable to complete the curriculum, participants may engage in musical and/or crafting activities. Participants will also have the opportunity to observe how the Peruvian public health system works. *Note: This placement does not involve shadowing doctors or nurses.

Participants’ responsibilities will vary based on the specific program for which they are accepted. *This partner organization is only available for full-time, 8-week service learning students.

Offering a mainstream curriculum for learners with physical disabilities, this school was founded in 1974 as a school for “differently abled” children in Xkosa-speaking communities of the Cape townships. Participants may assist in the following areas: administrative duties, coaching sports or leading other activities, supervising students during lunch and recreation times, classroom assistance and more depending on interests and skills. *This partner organization is only available for full-time, 8-week service learning students and is not available during the semester.

They strive to accommodate the needs of all learners and provide quality education based on a proud tradition of service. Participants in this role may help with after school care, assist students with homework, tutor students in subjects such as math and English, and serve as teaching assistants in classrooms. *This placement available to Study + Service-Learning Semester Combo students only.

Some local schools may offer summer school classes within a less-structured educational setting, but availability is not guaranteed.

This unique park brings surrounding communities together by providing a free and open recreational space for community members and promoting an appreciation for nature and the environment in addition to art, music, and technology. Students with an advanced level of Spanish may have additional opportunities to assist, design, and run workshops for youth, depending on availability and the needs of the organization.

Founded in 1992, this butterfly farm is located on the Rio Torres bio-corridor in central San Jose. They breed approximately 20 different butterfly species and care for the surrounding gardens to maintain the habitat. Their mission is to operate an eco-sustainable business that provides social, environmental, educational, cultural and economic benefits for the community. Participants will have a variety of opportunities including working in the greenhouse, nursery or laboratories, trail and park maintenance, feeding larvae and butterflies, social media marketing, and administrative or customer service assistance.

This organization has created an environment to care for the llamas and alpacas that are a historically vital piece of Peruvian culture. Raising these animals and harvesting their wool also leads to the preservation of traditional Incan spinning, dying, and weaving practices. These cultural values are promoted among locals and tourists alike through workshops and demonstrations held at the center. Participants will assist in caring for the animals and learning the traditions of Peruvian heritage. They may also assist with tours of the facility and weaving workshops. Depending on the season, opportunities may be available with planting and harvesting various vegetables that help to feed surrounding communities.

This non-profit's mission is to raise awareness about the social and environmental benefits of recycling and the negative consequences of plastic pollution, especially in aquatic ecosystems in and around Lima. Participants will assist the staff with research, seek project proposals for creative recycling initiatives, and develop information sessions for children, youth, and adults.. There may also be opportunities to work in a marketing capacity, generating graphics and promotional materials.

This non-profit organization is dedicated to the research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine wildlife (sea lions, dolphins, penguins, marine otters, and sea turtles) along the central and northern coastline of Peru. The organization's efforts rely heavily on community awareness and support, so observation and research are key parts of a participant's role. Daily duties may consist of facility maintenance, cleaning and feeding of animals, observation of rehabilitated animals, and data collection. *NOTE: This organization is located in San Bartolo, 50km south of the ISA office; accepted participants will be required to stay onsite in San Bartolo and therefore, this placement is not available to students on a semester study program. Centrally located in Cusco, this veterinary clinic is dedicated to providing high quality veterinary services to the local pets and service animals by focusing on preventative health, administering vaccines, performing surgeries, and conducting overall health assessments. Participants in the clinic may assist in various areas under the supervision of veterinary staff. Participants may have opportunities to assist customers, bathe and trim the animals, walk the dogs, clean the cages and exercise areas, and observe the veterinarians during procedures. Participants can also be a great asset to the clinic by translating for English-speaking clients.

This public center sponsored by the First Lady of the Dominican Republic provides diagnostic and rehabilitation services to children with mental and physical disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. The center aims to provide integrative services to children with special needs and develop their physical and mental abilities along with preparing them for effective social inclusion. Services at the center include evaluation, diagnosis, and therapy. Participants may have the opportunity to help physical therapy, nutrition, and psychology staff and also observe consultations. Placements that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility.

The organization also works in the areas of LGBT+ advocacy and fighting xenophobia. Depending on skills and interests, participants may have opportunities to interview clients, research, assist with event management and fundraising efforts, and help with social media and marketing efforts through various platforms.
